In Indonesia with Smile Train Italia

In July 2009 accompanied and witnessed the incredible work of a group of Italian Doctors (www.smiletrain.it) lead by Dr. Fabio Massimo Abenavoli. A group of 18 medical doctors, nurses and assistants operated for one week in the hospital of Tarakan, Indonesia, 61 patients affected by cleft lip and cleft palate. Without their engagement, these people would have never had a chance in their life to undergo such an operation.

The doctors use their holiday time for doing this. I am now working on a documentary I shot there, following the story of Rabasia, a 21 year old girl with massive deformation in her face who underwent an operation which will change her life. Emotionally this was for me one of the toughest assignments ever. Not because of the presence in the operating theater. It’s the stories of these people.
