Wir wollen diese Geschichte über die Arbeit von Dr. Sanduk Ruit aus Nepal und Dr. Geoff Tabin aus den USA auch dem deutschen Publikum zur Verfügung stellen. Dazu brauchen wir Geld: für die Herstellung der deutschen Fassung, für die Produktion der DVD und der dazugehörigen Musik-CD.

Diese “Independent Production” wurde von uns selbst ohne Filmförderung und Fernsehgelder produziert, weil uns das Projekt am Herzen lag. There will will be a new Workshop for photographers lead by myself and Grant Reed in June 2011 in Botswana/Zambia It will be a comfortable Tented Safari especially designed for the need of photographers who would like to work with the best light conditions and add some incredible shots to their portfolio. for accompanying non-photographers it will be also an incredible experience and a chance to learn something new. During the Grant and myself will be like an “open book” and happy to answer any questions. We will also work on some self-assigned goals for this trip and discuss our results around the fire at night. There are still some free seats, so don’t wait to reserve. The bushmen in the village of N≠ama dancing aroud the fire while their chief digests the incredible amount of energy collected during this ritual. Bushmen doctors enter in a state of trans that enables them to liberate from their own body negative energy and to fill the hole with a flux of positive energy. Something we, in the western culture, have forgotten to do long ago.

Have you ever had a dinner invitation by a small village in a remote area at the border of the Kalahari? Well I did, and it has been an incredible experience! I’m blessed I could share thes moments with these people. Would you take a stranger to dinner at home, without knowing him?

What you see in the pot is boiled Kudu meat. The fair sharing of food among all families of the village is quite a time intensive ceremony. It took about one hour to fill all the pots and dishes with the adequate portion of meat and rice. All village was gathered around the fire. Men and women where chatting using their distinctive language rich of click-sounds, while all children were watching silently at the food. Noone ever tried to get something before his turn. Patience seems to be one of the greatest vitues of the San Bushmen.

A joung boy of the Hadzabe Bushmen Tribe in Tanzania

I’m off to Namibia for about two weeks on a photography and research trip to work with the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. I’m looking for a story for a new documentary Film. Since my first encounter in Tanzania in 2007 with the Hadzabe Bushmen I was fascinated by the close relationship these people have with nature. I want to learn more about this. I’m in good hands with Patrick who is an experienced guide has already organized logistics for BBC and NatGeo productions. It will be him and me for the next two weeks on a very basic camp just outside bushmen villages. There will not be the comfort of one of my photographic tented safaris or organize for photographers, but I’m really looking forward to the chill-out part and the Gin and Tonic at the fireplace in the evening

The motion picture soundtrack of “Out of the Darkness” is composed by Markus Aust at Chez Muziek using and adapting original Nepal instruments compositions by an internationally awarded and one of the most famous Nepali flute masters of our times: Prem Rana Autari. I met Prem last week in Belgium during his Europe 2010 Tournee with his group Sur Sudha. He handed over to me the recordings he had composed for the film in Kathmandu. Flute is indeed not the only instrument that will he heard in the film. The whole range of Nepali instruments used in different communities are part of the soundtrack.

This really is a project where East meets West. As for American Dr. Geoff Tabin meeting Nepali Dr. Sanduk Ruit to change people’s live overnight also the soundtrack of the film will be a melting pot of Eastern and Western atmospheres, and we are all very anxious to see and listen the final result!

After 2 weeks of preparation and two days of shooting my Team and I have now finished shooting with RED 4K camera in a blue-screen studio in Cologne my first image advertisement spot. The client is a network of Medical Doctors. Thanks to all of my Team for their  fantastic work! I could not wish a better team. Special thanks to Luisa, Rainer and Jan who did an Awesome job also in the preparation phase and spent long hours making sure to minimize my mistakes. I’m now very curious to see the final result after post production in the coming weeks.

I wake up. It’s dark. No watch on my wrest. I can barely hold my eyes open, apparently something woke me up. It’s one of those times where for few seconds you don’t remember where you actually are. Where am I? What time is it? I guess all this traveling during the last 6 months confuses me. Then, the noise, again. I freeze. A cold shiver goes down my spine, and it takes me a fraction of a second to remember I am on a Tented Safari at the Eastern border of the Okavango Delta and what I am hearing is undoubtedly the deep roar of a lion. Close, very very close. Then here comes a second one, further away, at least 100 meters and in the opposite direction. I know I’m perfectly safe in my tent, but still the primeval memory of my cells remember that what I just heard is a predator. A pride of lions is just passing very close to our tented camp. The concert of deep moans and roars the lions use to communicate with the other pride members increases in volume. They are approaching. It’s now at least four distinct individuals I am hearing. I sit on my camp bed now, in silence trying to see through the mosquito net if I can spot them. No visual. I quickly find the spotlight, I collect my watch. It’s 4:30 am, 30 minutes before wake-up call. The lions are probably moving in search of prey. I then close my eye and keep listening to the concert of the bush slowly fading as the pride walks away . This is the start of another day into the wild. An experience away from civilization. In a place where we can feel how small and vulnerable we – Homo Sapiens Sapiens -  are after all. I’m in Botswana, hunting for images, taking only photos and leaving only footprints. Our crew passes by my tent at 5:15 to wake me up. The indistinguishable “knock knock” pronounced with a deep African voice makes me smile once more. It’s Jonas, part of our support crew of three. Jonas, KB and Mike had already prepared our fresh coffee.  Toasted bread is being prepared on the fire. It’s amazing what these guys can cook on a camp fire. How lovely this heat against the cold breeze of an African Fall morning. There’s nothing better to start off your day. It’s only 5:30 am, I’m already  overwhelmed with impressions and emotions and yet, it’s only the very beginning of another day in the bush, hunting for wildlife, working hard  to get the exceptional image, peeking in everyday life of untouched Nature. Not much time to catch the perfect morning light. Maybe today I will be lucky – I think – while Grant Reed, my experienced guide and talented photographer prepares his Canon camera loaded with a 300 mm f2,8 and shouts: “5 minutes to go!”. The quest for flying images of the Lilac Breated Roller is on also today!

I’m heading to Botswana tomorrow for my first Botswana Photo Safari with a very small group of clients. I’m very excited about it as it will be my first time in those regions which are considered the last untouched wonder of nature on earth. This time I will set myself the goal of focusing on elephants and water as a focus for my own work I would like to bring home. This time I promised myself not to bring my professional video equipment with me, in order to fully concentrate on photography and mentoring! I will carry the minimum indispensable equipment and bring along my two Nikon bodies D3 and D300s. I don’t really like the D300s for filming as I find it extremely limited compared to the way I am used to with professional video equipment. You would need to buy loads of stuff to make it easier working. I really wonder what Nikon developers had in mind when limiting the frame rate to 24p only… Canon developers (please forgive me I have to say this) have solved this much better offering more video features in 1080p and different frame rates…
